Friday, as I was slicing potatoes in preparation for dinner, I sliced a little more than potatoes. I got my thumb, too. I knew it hurt, but I didn't know how badly I had cut it until the gushing of blood wouldn't stop. It was a doozer! After several attempts of putting pressure on my thumb, while holding it up by my head, it still wouldn't stop bleeding. Dakota, watching closely while standing right next to me said, "Mom I can help you. I can press really hard, 'cuz I'm chubby and chubby girls can do anything!" I busted up laughing. That was one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time.
Later, I thought about how poignant her statement was, "...'cuz I'm chubby and chubby girls can do anything". It could easily be adopted as a personal slogan. (You could insert your own word in place of "chubby", if "chubby" doesn't work for you.) Her statement shows a sense of empowerment; it's a statement of self-acceptance; a positive affirmation of oneself. But, I doubt she had any of that in mind when she offered those words. She was just being her 4-yr-old self. And that's what makes it so funny.
Keep me laughing, kiddo!

oh my gosh she is cute!!
ReplyDeleteAsk if there's a spot for a 31 year old former neighbor :)
Hey and what happened with your thumb?
Well, you know what the cure for sliced thumbs is don't you? Fresh salsa! YA, you better come on over and barge on in. I'd be offended if you didn't!!! We miss you too darlin.
ReplyDeleteI love Dakota's perspective. She's a positive girl because she is being raised in a positive environment.
