Dr. Seuss, We Love You!

Dr. Seuss's books have been enjoyed time and time again in our house. His clever way of writing puts smiles on readers' faces, all the while, "sneaking" in teaching moments. Often, the young child never even knows she's learning about phonics, rhyming, poetry, meter, along with life's lessons.

Many schools around the nation (including our elementary school) celebrate his birthday (March 2nd) in various ways. Monte Vista Elementary students participated in a literacy week full of fun reading-related activities. My girls particularly enjoyed the festivities. They ate green eggs and ham for lunch on one day (a real treat, apparently). We attended "Books and Buddies" where entire families showed up at 7:30 a.m. in the cafeteria for a yummy breakfast of muffins, bagels, fruit, milks, and juices and read together. The girls' classes had guest readers from the fire and police departments, Leo the Lion (mascot from REAL Salt Lake), and other famous book characters, like Clifford the Big Red Dog. A Scholastic Book Fair happened the week before along with a fundraiser that helped raise $$$ for students without books. The fundraising goal was met, so the principal had to dress up as ELVIS. Later in the literacy week, the students got to dress up as a favorite book character. Dakota went as "Fancy Nancy", Makenna was "Laura Ingalls Wilder", and Brooklyn was the "Wicked Witch of the West" from "The Wizard of Oz". (I wish I had gotten pics of them that day. They were so cute!) All the second graders put on a Dr. Seuss show for the parents.  Makenna picked me to go up on stage with her for a "No Laughing Contest".  She won.  Fox 13 News Live at 11 came to the school at filmed them singing one of their favorite songs from the program entitled, "Dr. Seuss, We Love You!".  They were on T.V.!   Fun stuff and great memories.

Below are a few photos of Makenna on her performance day.

Can you see Mak on the end, front row?
