Dakota's Surgical Consults

We just got home from our appointments today with Drs. Randall and Saddiqui. Both consults went well and we now have two more specialists watching over Dakota's progress. The purpose of these visits was to allow the surgeons to meet Dakota, briefly talk over her disease/tumor, and to set out a game plan. Dr. Randall, the orthopedic surgeon, is consistent with Dr. Viskochil's (the geneticist) findings and ideas, in that we can't get in there right now. Usually, they leave these kinds of tumors alone, unless they start getting in the way (pain, limiting use of limb, etc.) He feels it best to see if it's growing, try the rapamycin (suppressor drug), and see how long she can last with it. So, the apparent good news is...we don't have to do anything now. The bad news...these types of tumors have a 10-12% chance of becoming malignant. I always understood that that was the case for future tumors, but did not know that this very tumor has that same chance of turning cancerous. YIKES! So essentially, by leaving surgery as a very last, last resort, and "watching" it, we have to leave alone a tumor that might give her cancer in the future. Now we have a more specific thing to pray for. Sometimes our prayers are very basic (especially with the little girls). "...please bless that Dakota's lumps will get better..." In my prayers, I usually ask that her lumps won't cause her discomfort; that she will develop normally, and not have too many other problems with learning and such; that the doctors who's care she is in will be blessed and guided; etc. Now, I need to pray that tumor away. Is it possible for these kinds of tumors to just go away? Can rapamycin shrink them to nothing? I've read that this drug is used after surgery, but what about before. I'm not sure, but I do know that prayer can be more powerful than any drug. So I'll keep on praying. For today...we are good.

  1. Keep the faith girl. You're right. The power of prayer and the power of the priesthood.....everything pales....

Remember Elder Wirthlin's talk. "Come What May and Love It". My motto right now.
