First Day of School 2010-11

Well, it's that time of year again when the kiddos go back to school.  Usually, it is a welcomed changed to the parents, but not for me.  Our summer was cut way to short with this year-round school schedule.  My girls got a whopping three weeks off before having to pack their backpacks and start the next grade level.

We registered the school-aged girls for Hawthorn Academy, a new Charter school in West Jordan.  It is in it's second year.  Already, there is a long waiting list.  So far, we know that Brooklyn got accepted.  However, Makenna and Dakota did not and are on the waiting list.  We will have to make the decision to pull them out if they get accepted mid-year.  This may prove to be difficult as they both have great teachers, but feel that Hawthorn will be a better choice for them if the opportunity comes along.  Our elementary school has some issues that I am concerned with, namely some of the teachers.  Brooklyn had a horrible experience last year in 5th grade.  I think that that year was a total waste for her.  She didn't learn much (other than what I supplemented with at home).  It amazes me that newer teachers don't have mentors to follow, or at least are being allowed to continue teaching...or better yet, non teaching effectively.  Brooklyn also was a victim of bullying last year.  The momma bear in me had to come out to be an advocate for her.  (See this post for that experience.)  We are praying for a more positive school experience for Brooklyn.  She deserves it!

Dakota is now in First Grade and will be embarking on a very new experience as she enters the Chinese Immersion program at our local elementary school.  She will do English the first half of her day and Chinese the second half.  Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Spelling, etc.) will be done during the English portion.  Science, Math, and Chinese Culture will be taught during the next half.  It will be interesting to see how much she loves it.  So far, so good.  She comes home everyday telling me what she learned in Chinese.  It is fun to see her try new words out with Daddy.  (He served a Chinese speaking mission.)

Mr. Vierra - English

Mrs. McFarland - Chinese
Makenna is our big 3rd grader.  Wow, is she growing up!  She's almost taller than her new teacher.  Mrs. Champion has a great reputation at the school so we are happy that Makenna is in her class.  But...we will see what happens with the waiting list at Hawthorn Academy.
