Brooklyn and Makenna decided to put up a lemonade stand with two other sister neighbors. They were set on doing it at that moment. We scrambled around the house looking for supplies (including lemonade) to set up shop...but to no avail...we had no lemonade. We had red fruit punch, though, and that was good enough for them. We quickly mixed up the punch in a 5 gallon jug, found a table and chairs, rounded up some cups and napkins and the girls threw together some signage. They got to the top of the street (which is quite a jaunt from our house) in order to be closer to the heavier traffic. They were so excited, jumping up and down with every passing car. Then they waited...and waited...and waited...and waited...with not much business other than the Bishop of our ward who lives in our neighborhood (bless his heart) and two other girls (whom they didn't know) that confessed that they felt sorry for them. They did not, however, have a lack of drinkers. Between Dakota, Oakley and their other little friend whom did not have any money and were expecting freebies, the punch was half gone already.
Darin and I decided to go see how things were going. We hopped in the car (with a few coins in our pockets) and became the next welcomed patrons of their "Lemonade Stand". Next, the parents of the other "business partners" came to buy a few drinks. As far as the girls were concerned, business was great and they were having a blast.
However, it became apparent, later, that business was slow and it was time to take down shop and add up the profits. They soon figured out that that was a lot of work for not much gain, especially when divided between the four of them. (I think they only made about $3 each.) I didn't have the heart to tell them that in the real world, a lot of their money would have come back to me to pay for the supplies. They were excited about their few dollars earned and they had fun with friends...and at the end of the day...that is all that should matter to little girls!
Counting their earnings.
