Have any of you who keep blogs gotten unsolicited comments left on your blog? I just deleted one that showed up today on an old post about Dakota that I wrote back in August. It was one of those spam-like emails that you get listing a whole bunch of words like: female, viagra, herbal use, mexico, homemade, etc. This is the first time it's happened, but I don't want it happening again. It's one thing to get it in your personal e-mail inbox if SPAM doesn't catch it, but it's quite another to get it posted as a comment on your public blog for all readers to see/read. I imagine that it's some new format for mass mailings like they do with email lists that have been sold, but how do they mass onto blogs?
When any of you leave a comment, do you have to type in a "code word" to post it? Or does mine just let you post? I've noticed it is either or on the blogs that I have left comments on. Some even say that the comment has to be reviewed by the "owner" of the blog, before it will appear. I guess it depends on how you set it up. Maybe I'll have to take a closer look at what settings I have it on. Like I said, this is a first, but it's a little disturbing to have my "personal" forum that I share openly with others "in good faith", get interrupted with unappreciated spam marketing haplessness. I don't want to make my blog private if I don't have to. I guess I'm just too trusting that most people are intrinsically good.
Let me know, if this has happened to any of you or if you have any suggestions (of how I can make it stop). Thanks bunches!

I've never had it happen to mine. A friend had it happen to hers and she's not sure why.
ReplyDeleteTo set the word verification on your dashboard go to: Settings, comments, word verification "yes"
Yep, it happened to me. It bothered me a ton. I can't remember what I did about it (It's been a long time), but it hasn't happened since. Yeah! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I did a couple of things that should help. Chastina, your suggestion was right on. I checked my settings and needed to set the word verification on. Sorry, to those of you who have been free from doing that in the past. In order to prevent spam comments, all comments will have to be accompanied by a word verification. I also made sure that my blog can't come up on any search engines. Better for safety purposes. Thanks for your help.
ReplyDeleteAnother couple of things you should do, if you haven't already: in your "settings" section, make sure that you have "NO" under the category "Add your blog to your listing?" and "Let search engines find your blog." Also in your "comment" settings, you can limit the people who comment to just a specific list. The down side of that is you may miss some comments you would like if you don't have them on your approved list of commentators.
ReplyDeleteI have in the past received unwanted comments, but it has been a very long time, and I think that those settings helped. Good luck!
Yep it happened to me plus I was getting a bunch of hits a day from places that I knoew no one so...I went private.
