We spent Thanksgiving alone this year at our home. My siblings all went to Vegas to my parents' house for the holiday weekend and some of Darin's family (whom we had tentatively planned to spend the day with) had some health issues come up that prevented us from going to their house. So, I cooked the meal all by myself. After spending hours and hours and hours in the kitchen, I vow to never do that again! I don't know how my mom did it (and still does it) year after year. I meant to keep it simple, but you know me...that's not possible. We enjoyed a lovely, quiet dinner with the whole spread including turkey, stuffing, mashed taters and gravy, broccoli a la chestnut, celery sticks with cheese whiz, olives, cranberry sauce, rolls, candied sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. (Darin did the pies, thank goodness.)
Here are a few shots of "the spread".
Later that night (after spending another couple hours in the kitchen cleaning), I played card games with the girls. They are finally getting old enough to play "big people" games with me. Well, almost...We played "Go Fish", "Donkey", and "?". The games went well, for a while, and we had a great time...
...And then the mood changed a little...people were losing...in these games not everyone is a happy little winner like in the kiddie games...
Poor baby...I was helping her play (she and I shared hands) and we lost! The reality of losing is hard to take sometimes for these little ones. After the girls realized that losing is part of the game (and that in a case of family fun card playing) winning is not everything, and there's always another hand, we had quite a fun time. I think Santa needs to bring more family games for Christmas, now that the kids are getting older and lessons are being learned about winning (and not rubbing it in) and losing with class.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
